But still, this was a new horror movie, and being a life-long avid horror afficianado, of course I took the time to sit down and watch "Dark Light.
Turns out that it was actually time, money and effort well invested, because "Dark Light" turned out to be a rather enjoyable horror movie. What really worked was the way that director Padraig Reynolds had managed to capture the essence of the horror movies that I grew up with during the late 1980s and early 1990s. So this felt very much like a trip down memory lane for me.
While the storyline was generic; especially for someone like myself having grown up watching just about every single horror movie that I could manage to get my hands on, then there was just something essentially right about this movie.
The creature design was definitely interesting, and something that you haven't really seen in other movies. I will not ruin anything here and give anything away, you just have to watch it for yourself.
As for the acting in the movie, well of course you shouldn't be expecting any award-winning performances here, because the movie is not driven by character performances. Don't get me wrong here, because I will say that the acting in the movie was good.
My rating of "Dark Light" is a six out of ten stars.

They settle on a give-and-take emotional battle that goes back to TVs All in the Family (as well as the 1940s radio show The Bickersons) but with contemporary sarcasm. This films smarter-than-thou revelations of human foible, personal pretense, and selfishness suggest sketch comedy: Pete abandons his family when he sees the approaching avalanche, which incriminates him to Billie, who becomes increasingly hostile and distant. But this slickness lacks depth, even though Louis-Dreyfus and Farrell play it straight. Shes still Seinfeld s Elaine Benes, archetypal urbane harridan, and hes his usual beady-eyed wreck of a man. Her best scene, when Billie is alone and seduced by a young Italian ski bum (Giulio Berruti) recalls Juliette Binoches middle-aged sexual anxiety but is cheapened by Billies resorting to #MeToo bravado — a self-congratulatory sitcom reflex. TV formula is only part of Downhill s problem; its source material was shallow in different ways. Östlund took an Ingmar Bergman subject and gave it Stanley Kubrick cynicism — marriage seen without cultural or spiritual roots but as an art-movie experiment. Originally titled “Turist” to convey existential panic, Force Majeure also indicated inescapable fate. Downhill gets close to that only when Pete drunkenly confesses his marriages failure (“Science made us parents”. This sloppy, pathetic disclosure is a long way from Force Majeure or the frankness of Kubricks Eyes Wide Shut; it also betrays the humanist legacy of the American film to which Kubrick paid homage: Paul Mazurskys Blume in Love, a classic 70s comedy that explored shifting sex mores with admirable affection. Downhill takes TVs easy way out by shifting to trendy male-bashing, as in Billies demand to Pete: “If you dont like the way I see you, then show me something different. ” This appeasement to one-sided political correctness is how TV culture operates; its not emotionally exploratory cinema as with Kubrick, Mazursky, or those unnerving Alps sequences contrasting nature to personality in Ken Russells powerful film of D. H. Lawrences Women in Love. Faxon, Rash, Louis-Dreyfus, and Farrell show little imagination or originality. (Louis-Dreyfus is also the films producer, so Billie gets the final cruel quip. Their inadequate approach to sexual relations hides the greater tensions now stressing our culture. Thats the tragedy of cinemas being trivialized by TV-makers. This is not the golden age of television but the tarnished age of movies.

An American family, the Stantons—Billie ( Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete (Will Ferrell) and their young sons, Finn (Julian Grey) and Emerson (Ammon Jacob Ford)—arrive at an Austrian ski resort. As they disembark from their tour bus, Billie notices that there are no other children among the swarm of vacationers; moments later, theyre greeted by Charlotte (Miranda Otto) a pushily enthusiastic Austrian host who, asked about the clientele, informs the Stantons that its not a place for children but, rather, “the Ibiza of the Alps, ” a pleasure dome for adults where she, flamboyantly libertine, intends to make sure that Billie and Pete get some of the pleasure. (She displays her intentions quickly, giving Billie a pair of hearty kisses on the cheek and, accidentally on purpose, giving Pete one on the lips. Who planned this trip? The movie is set in the present day, not in the pre-Internet age of word-of-mouth and published guidebooks. Pete is a real-estate executive; Billie is an attorney. It seems likely that theyd have researched their destination at least a little bit before booking it. In short, the very premise sets up such bewildering and undeveloped practicalities (Did Pete take charge and leave Billie out of the loop? Did he lie. that the movie is nearly over by the time its begun. Pete is on his cell phone when the Stantons get off the bus (and Billie is reproaching him for being on it) hes texting his younger colleague, Zach (Zach Woods) who is also on a European vacation—a spontaneous and impulsive one—with his similarly young girlfriend, Rosie (Zoe Chao) whose free-spirited temperament is in brash evidence on their Instagram posts. Pete seemingly envies his childless colleagues unencumbered life style and openly affectionate relationship. He also yearns for some guy-ish company and so lies to Billie that Zach is getting in touch with him when, in fact, its the reverse. At Petes prompting, Zach and Rosie eventually shift their plans to join the Stantons. This is all to say that the marriage of Billie and Pete is in trouble from the start, in ways that are both highly stereotypical and severely ill-defined. The Stantons have no politics, no culture, no family background, no range of experience, no interests, no habits, no expressions, no style—no substance and no depth. They are generic white upper-middle-class movie creatures, and Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell are left to fill the emptiness of their roles with their own reserves of gesture and expression, empathy and curiosity. The event that brings the couples relationship problems to a head is the same as in “Force Majeure”: while the family is sitting on an outdoor mountainside deck, a controlled avalanche sends snow barreling down the slope, apparently right at the deck, sparking panic among the vacationers—and, in both films, the paterfamilias grabs his phone and bolts, rather than staying at the table to try to protect his family. (In “Force Majeure, ” he records the avalanche; in “Downhill, ” he doesnt. In both movies, the mans seemingly instinctive display of cowardice proves instantly corrosive to the marriage. Both films are variations on a theme by Ernest Hemingway—specifically, the one in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, ” a 1936 story (originally published in Cosmopolitan) about a couple of rich American socialites on a high-priced hunting trip in Africa, where Francis, in the presence of a charging lion, bolts, in full view of his wife, Margot; the white hunter, Robert Wilson, whos running the hunt; and the local black men who are Wilsons much-put-upon staff. Hemingways story quickly and deeply parses the couples intimate secrets and those of their set, the institutional organization of rich peoples safaris and the staffers who work for them, the psychology of cowardice and courage and the psychic overtones and romantic implications of both, not to mention even the inner lives of hunted and wounded animals. (For the record, a far better cinematic drama than “Force Majeure” and “Downhill, ” based on the same theme of Hemingway, is Julia Loktevs 2011 drama “ The Loneliest Planet. ”) Theres a mistaken notion, popular around Twitter, that “Force Majeure” is actually a comedy. “Force Majeure” is a satire, but its element of comedy is more derisive than funny. (It shares this quality with the films of Michael Haneke, whom Östlund often seems to be knocking off. “Force Majeure” masks its superficial and scattershot mockery of bourgeois moral conventions with a chilly style that leaves out his characters individual traits, interests, inclinations, and desires, just as Faxon and Rash do. In Östlunds approach, however, that spare and rigid reserve is a meaningful mannerism—it plays the role of a faux objectivity that masks the filmmakers facility as clarity, masks his derision as analysis, masks his contempt as critique. With “Downhill, ” Faxon and Rash (plus their co-writer Jesse Armstrong) prismatically split “Force Majeure” into two distinct strands—the faux sociological critique becomes pure and harsh domestic melodrama, and the element of mockery becomes out-and-out antic comedy thats applied to the story like goofy stickers. The character of Charlotte tosses off heavily accented malapropisms (informing the Stantons that they can get to the next town in “minutes of twenty”) along with stereotypical European licentiousness (describing sex as no more intimate than a handshake) and Billies effort at self-pleasuring in a public setting ends with pure though mild slapstick. Its the melodrama thats the core of the film, however, and here Faxon and Rash lapse all the more grievously into flattening stereotypes. So little is known of whats going on between Billie and Pete, from the start of the film, that her contempt for Pete after his cowardly showing is, rather than an element in their marriage, the entire story. When Pete returns to the table, finding Billie and the boys huddling in terror as the snow blows away, he compounds his act of cowardice with a double denial—refusing to admit that what theyd been through was anything serious or that hed ditched the family and run. This attempted gaslighting of his family gives rise to the one notable moment in the film, one in which the melodrama veers toward comedy and then sharply back into pathos—a scene in which Billie, in the presence of friends, calls on the boys to deliver their version of what Pete did during the avalanche. Its a moment that could have set the movie off in new and odd directions. Instead, it stands apart and stands out as a mere plot point, one that is dropped as quickly as its presented. (It pops up again later, similarly conveniently, briefly, and inconsequentially. The failure of Faxon and Rash mirrors that of Östlund in “Force Majeure”: a too-easy sense that they can recognize and define characters by their type. Just as the main dramatic moment in both films is a whiteout, with the screens details obliterated by a barrage of snow, the characters and the milieux that the “Downhill” filmmakers depict are similarly blanked out by a tightly controlled fabrication. They know these people so well, so they think, that their familiarity breeds something as aesthetically dreadful as Östlunds contempt: indifference.

I get such a kick out of seeing his commitment to character. in very broad ways and in very small ways, both. It always works because he's authentic. WF: I'm not so familiar with Julia's work. He keeps throwing up obstacles to avoid discussing this event in which he knows he has not behaved honorably. JLD: It makes it so much worse. I think about this movie and I think if he had still done that — WF: But then come around the corner and said — JLD: Oh my god, I cannot believe what just happened. WF: That was awful. If you hate me forever, I get it. JLD: Yeah. Then it's a different story. WF: But his ego can't take the fact that he actually did that, and the shame is so white-hot. On how their own experiences added to the movie JLD: We're both now in long marriages with kids. So we certainly understand in our bones what that is. And also, I think I can feel what it might be like, not because it's happened to me, but because I'm so trusting of my husband. If he behaved in a certain way that undermined my experience with him to this point, you know, if he all of a sudden revealed himself to be not the man I've known for 30 years, that would rock my world like nothing else. WF: And the same for me — with the love and respect I have for my wife, the sadness and shame I would feel if I behaved in the way that Pete had; I was able to kind of really put myself there and just feel like just a horrible human being. JLD: Shame is definitely a cast member in this movie. On taking on roles people aren't expecting from them JLD: Sure. But that's the fun of it, right? I mean, you know, we're not here to play it safe. And the material was delicious. And we were ready to eat it up. I saw this movie with my 4 daughters and we all Loved it! We are not professional movie reviewers or anything like that but absolutely enjoyed all the different emotions in this movie, it was Charming, Comical, Witty, Action Packed, Heart Warming, Suspenseful, and more! We also loved the relationship between David Batista & Chloe Coleman. just Precious, and their performances charming! There was some violence and language but nothing bloody or disgusting.

My Spy is a ridiculously clueless film - it essentially has no idea what it wants to be. One thing it is for sure is that it's incredibly boring, cringe and unfunny, with forced charm and emotion. The film's story completely deviates from a coming-of-age story to an action film. The dialogue and performances were god awful and nothing about the underdeveloped characters made you engaged.

I think that about sums it up - What is this movie? What is it trying to be? And when, oh when, will it end?
It's a bit too violent and has too many pointless, non-story progressing scenes to be a kids' movie but it is definitely not for adults. All the good bits are in the 30-second advert that convinced us to go and see it.

Although Chloe Coleman is an excellent actress and very watchable, every other character was unbelievable, unappealing and terribly written. What a waste of clever people like Kristen Schaal (or as I call her, Mel from Flight of the Conchords.
My older son thought it was okay but when pressed, couldn't name a favourite scene. The younger one gave up and ended up playing a game on my phone about an hour in.

Shot in black and white, this film is gorgeous and surreal. The actors on the set of The White Sheik come across as gypsy or circus like. They sport tough attitudes and this makes a nice contrast to Vanda's wide-eyed innocence.
